Selected from the regular production releases, I have put together a list of 10 cigars that I believe every aficionado must have at all times. Special releases cigars are not chosen as they are part of another category that will be tackled in my future blogs.

Some cigars are more expensive than others, yet the selected vitolas were solely based on the taste, blend and status that they bring to their brand.

The Perfect 10

Do you remember that proud moment in your life when you decided to buy your first humidor? What actually went through your mind? Personally, I had simply thought of it as a storage place for my small and negligible cigar stock. Now be honest, what went through your mind when you decided to go for your second, third or even fourth humidor? In my opinion, when your reach this phase it means that you can finally consider yourself an aficionado. Most importantly, you must now carefully select a bunch of cigars that you would like to age, store and smoke.

Personal Story

My love and passion for cigars has led me to subscribe to multiple cigar websites and newsletters that send monthly and quarterly updates about the industry. One night an email showed up in my inbox and mentioned the release a new Limited Edition cigar from H. Upmann. "Here we go again" I thought to myself. It was going to be another Magnum 50 like-cigar. Don't get me wrong, I am not belittling the Magnum 50 whatsoever. It is a great cigar that can always be found in my humidor. Peeking at the email, I then saw a fairly thick ring gauge and a dark wrapper with a big "56" on the band. I want this box, I need this box and I will get this box.

The Edmundo line was introduced in 2004, however it wasn't until 2013 when Montecristo released the Double Edmundo size vitola. This gorgeous cigar is totally hand made from selected leaves originating from the famous "Vuelta Abajo", Pinar Del Rio region in Cuba. The flawless light brown wrapper is terminated at the head by an elegant new Montecristo band whose Fleur-De-Lis shines bright like a diamond. The unlit Double Edmundo embodies rich leathery and oaky aromas. Number 15 spot on the Top 25 cigars of 2014 by Cigar Aficionado.

Personal Story

The first time I ever heard of the brand Trinidad was approximately 5 years ago while reading my first cigar book - I had bought it and felt the necessity to go through it. The image is still engraved in my memory. In one column was a big list of the most common and "global" Cuban cigar brands, such as Montecristo, Partagas, Romeo Y Julieta, etc. The second column had a smaller list of the "multi-local" brands which included Punch, Bolivar, Robaina, etc. However the third column was reserved for the "niche" Cuban cigar brands in which Trinidad was part along with Cuaba and San Cristobal. I felt the urge to get my hands on and to smoke one of these brands ASAP. I had only one plan the next day; Go and check out the local cigar shop in Ottawa, Canada. The shop opened at 11:00am and there I was - at 11:15am - already seeking the uncommon yet exquisite cigar.

Personal Story

Most of the Montecristo's have really wowed me, most certainly the Montecristo No.2. The Open Eagle - if my memory serves me well - was the first Montecristo I ever tried. I did not give it much thought since at that time I was simply cigars just to look cool and to hang out more often with my Dad. Fast forward a couple of years ahead and there I was standing in the enormous walk-in humidor at the La Casa Del Habano at the Beirut International Airport. Having purchased a box of Petit Coronas, i decided to opt for a box of much larger cigars.

On my way to Dubai from Beirut, I had made my usual stop at the La Casa Del Habano Duty Free shop at Beirut International Airport. Known for their huge cigar collection, I asked the stewardess to direct me to the non-Cuban walk in humidor. I was quite curious to see what kind of sticks they had kept aging in this under-rated humidified room. Never heard of a VegaFina before, I grabbed a box a rushed my way to the airplane.

Personal Story

I am a person that appreciates good cigars. The best way to get to know which cigar is worth trying is to look at other aficionado’s opinions. Looking at CigarAficionado’s website, I noticed that the numero uno cigar of 2013 is surprisingly the Montecristo No.2. I had the pleasure of smoking this cigar in 2012 and looking back at the taste notes corresponding to that cigar, it seems my opinions had mixed results. Since 2012, I have had the chance to try out various new brands and have become much more exposed to the art of cigar. I can confirm that my knowledge has grown deeply therefore decided to give this cigar of the year a second chance.

Personal Story

Great friends of mine from Toronto had gone on a road trip across the beautiful Canadian provinces. On their way back, they decided to make a quick stop in Chicago to purchase some fine non-Cuban cigars. If I remember correctly, a medley of 15 cigar sticks cost around 120$ and each Prensado stood at approx. 11$. They knew I loved full-bodied cigars and had therefore brought me 3 Prensado Churchills.

During a trip to Houston in April 2014, I purchased a box of 20 from a local shop called “Mike’s Cigar Room” in the Woodlands. We smoked a couple in the Marriott hotel and the rest were brought back to Dubai and enjoyed in its luxurious lounges.
